Simple Zooming with the iPhone’s Camera

We had a famous, to be left unnamed, lawyer swing by the shop in Mandeville on Saturday afternoon with some firmware issues on his wife’s iPhone 3G.  While we were tinkering away on getting the problem resolved for them he asked a simple but none the less interesting question: “How do I zoom with this thing?”

I was showing him a few high ranking apps for camera tweaking in the app store such as PhotoShop Mobile and Chimera when I realized something.  While these apps and others can perform some powerful photo optimization and assistance in point and shoot, this fella just wanted a simple zoom solution.  Turns our there is indeed an app for that and it is called screen capture.

Simply swipe to the photo you want a deeper look at, zoom in via pinch-zoom, tap the screen to remove the UI and tap the power and home buttons simultaneously.  Click.  Now you have the original as well as a close up in your camera roll. Either delete the original or hold on to it, your call.  It’s not the most sophisticated approach but for a certain unnamed TV lawyer it does the trick nicely.
